As I write this, I have a serious craving for the little fish and mutton patties that Luxmy makes, and the string hoppers, and the biryani, and well, just let me pig out at one of my favourite take out joints.
My introduction to Luxmy Foods came through my mom, many years ago. This is the place that moms go to when they need to pick up pre-cooked appetizers and meals for dinner parties. I picked up the habit, and stop by whenever I am in the area.
Luxmy is well known for their patties. Smaller version of their Jamaican counterparts, served in a few different ways. Fish patties mix codfish or tuna with spices and potatoes. There’s also mutton, and vegetable which is a mixture of peas, corn, onions, and carrots.
String Hoppers are also a very hot item. They are soft rice noodles, that look like they’ve been curled into spirals. The cooking method involves mixing rice flour dough with seasoning and water. The dough is forced through a special hand press that that creates tiny noodles. The noodles are then placed on wicker mats and steamed. The light and lacy noodles are then paired off with a variety of accoutrements, mainly sambol and curry. It’s a staple of Sri Lanka and it is incredibly addictive.
String Hoppers are sold in sets of 10, 25, 50. They come with 2 accoutrements. Sambal is a spicy mixture of grated coconut, onion, chili powder, garlic, and lemon juice. Sothi is a coconut milk reduction with plenty of herbs, tomatoes, and chilies. The combination very easy to eat and plays on the simplest desires for heat. The Sambal is spicy while the Sothi is cooling.
But you don’t want to look like a novice. Keep the Sambal and Sothi, try the curries next. Small morsels of mutton marinated and cooked in a thick and spicy curry. Use the string hoppers to dip the curry, or you can pour the curry on top and work your way through. This is food that requires the use of your hands.
There’s yet another way to eat String Hoppers. Get them Kothu style. Here the string hoppers are chopped up into little bits and then tossed with your favourite curry.
Other Sri Lankan treats to try > Mutton and vegetable rolls which are stuffed flour rolls with a mixture of meat and spices.
