Little Fin

After two very successful fine dining concepts (The Chase, Collette), the chase hospitality group’s latest project is a quick service, grab n’ go seafood joint called little fin. It officially opens today.

The newest fish shack in Toronto is located on Temperance street, right next to the Chase restaurants. You may have heard of Little Fin before, as the chase hospitality group has been trying to open the takeout counter for over a year. Last summer they featured popups across the city with a little fin branded trailer, handing out free lobster rolls. Soon after exec chef Michael Steh and his brigade of chefs, along with partner Steven Salm, shifted their focus to Colette,

With their latest, the attention is now on fresh seafood and bringing the chase flair to quick service dining. Chef Nigel Finley (Chase, Catch) runs the show at Little Fin, with the goal of using fresh ingredients, sustainable fish, and the chase’s signature luxuriance style to create each dish.

The menu features a variety of fish (big eye tuna, salmon, mahi, haddock) served on a choice of sesame bun, salad (seaweed, garden) or with crispy potatoes. You pick the protein and how you want to enjoy it (on a bun or with a salad). A plethora of sides are also available; chili-spiced broccoli, sweet potato chowder with lobster. The haddock was a highlight, fried gently in a tempura batter and served with a house-made hot sauce (you’ll want to buy a bottle of that). No seafood shack in Toronto would be complete without a crab or lobster roll, and those options are available. Prices range from $9 to $22.75 for the lobster blt (pictured above). The crab roll is particularly good, it comes with a heaping of smoked crab meat, corn and a mother sauce. Also notable was the crispy rock shrimp, sweet and slightly spicy, best enjoyed on a seaweed salad.

You’ll notice that the buns at little fin are all black, they’re made from bamboo charcoal powder for a signature look and come in daily from Colette. No seating inside, there is a communal patio table outside. Little Fin is licensed, a variety of beers are available (kronenbourg, creemore) and local wines from Stratus (Riesling and the Red blend, 5oz for $9.50).
