A good lunch is often hard to come by. I’ve been spoiled by the lush offerings of the Bloor/Yonge neighbourhood, by its mass of eclectic offerings, from bento box chicken, to saucy Asian dishes, to spicy biryani platters. I’m hard to please, and always on the prowl for something new. Recently, I found something new, and it made my day.
Someone mentioned recently that people often need to be reminded of the obvious, to recognize the value of an already existing great idea. In the case of the Montreal Bread Company, art imitates art, by jumping from its European-flavoured parent city, to this ever-hungry eclectic microcosm that we call home. MBCO, as they’ve abbreviated themselves, has imported itself to Toronto, giving us a chance to get a taste of delicious French culture. MBCO takes the ordinary boulangerie, and transforms it into a “nouveau bakery/café concept”, as they call themselves. There are already 4 locations open in Montreal, another 4 scheduled for recent opening, and now, they’ve graced us with their presence too. Another branch is set to open in the TD Centre this spring.
The small space, located behind the Pottery Barn on Bloor St (at Bay St), is at the corner of Bellair & Cumberland streets. It maintains a Bloor St. address, but confusingly so, for first-timers. The vibe at MBCO is set on ‘extra-busy’, and the line up extends out of the door. A few small tables are set up outside, anticipating the lack of space inside. The Marche style counter gives view to a wide selection of salads, sandwiches, and ‘fresh bread art’.
